The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has transitioned key UAN services to a mobile-first process integrated with Aadhaar verification, marking a significant shift in how Indian workers manage their provident fund accounts.
The Labour Ministry’s latest push for employees to use the government’s UMANG app is not simply a convenience update: it underlines a broader change in how millions of provident fund members must now handle some of their most basic EPFO tasks. What was once done on the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation’s member portal, especially generating or activating a Universal Account Number, has been shifted to a mobile-first process tied to Aadhaar face checks. In its 4 September post on X, highlighted by Mint a day later, the ministry said members could use UMANG to “allot, activate, and authenticate your UAN (Universal Account Number)”. Once that is done, workers can move on to routine account tasks such as checking their EPF balance, downloading their passbook, tracking claims and updating know-your-customer details. The app-based route requires an Aadhaar number, a mobile number already linked to Aadhaar and the Aadhaar Face RD application for the facial verification step. (livemint.com)
That matters because the UAN is the anchor number that ties together a worker’s provident fund records across different employers. Mint said the change gives members a way to complete the process on a smartphone rather than relying on an employer’s back office or a visit to an EPFO office, which helps explain why the ministry has chosen to publicise the app again even though the underlying shift began earlier this year. The move itself dates back to the summer overhaul of EPFO’s digital systems. Moneycontrol reported that the upgraded Unified Member Portal was rolled out in phases from 3 July 2026, while Business Standard said the relaunch followed scheduled maintenance and included database consolidation and software upgrades. India Today added that the portal came back after nearly a week of maintenance, and that EPFO framed the revamp as a way to improve speed, security and reliability. For salaried workers, the practical result was simple: two familiar web functions, new UAN generation and UAN activation, were no longer where they used to be. (moneycontrol.com)
The operational split is now clearer than the original announcement suggested. Members without a UAN are expected to open UMANG and choose “UAN Allotment and Activation”. Those who already have a UAN but never activated it must use “UAN Activation”. In both cases, the flow runs through Aadhaar-linked mobile verification and face authentication. For users whose Aadhaar details are not already tied to a UAN, the system can generate one and send it to the registered mobile number. IANS reported that workers who already have an EPF account but were never allotted a UAN can also complete verification in the app so the newly generated number is linked back to that existing account. What remains on the web portal is where the reporting becomes more complicated. The Economic Times said on 2 September that members could still use the EPFO website to track pension-on-higher-wages applications, retrieve a UAN, file death claims and, in some cases, obtain a UAN for an existing PF account. However, earlier reports from Moneycontrol, Business Standard and India Today said direct UAN allotment on the portal had been discontinued alongside online activation, and the notice currently displayed on EPFO’s member portal tells users that both direct UAN allotment and UAN activation through the website have ended and directs them to UMANG instead. (economictimes.indiatimes.com)
Some other services appear to have survived the reshuffle. IANS said the upgraded system has made forgotten UAN retrieval easier through registered-mobile and document verification, and that death claim settlements for nominees and legal heirs were not affected by the suspension of portal-based UAN activation. The same dispatch also placed the digital changes in the context of wider rule updates, noting that the Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme, 2026 introduced partial-withdrawal provisions from 29 June 2026 under which members must leave at least 25 per cent of their eligible balance untouched before making such a withdrawal. For members, the immediate lesson is that the safest assumption is no longer that the EPFO website will handle first-time UAN work. The ministry’s message, the July reporting on the portal overhaul and the current notice on the member login page all point in the same direction: anyone trying to generate or activate a UAN should have their Aadhaar-linked mobile ready, install the Aadhaar Face RD app and expect to complete the process through UMANG. The portal still appears to handle some follow-up services, but the centre of gravity for identity and onboarding has clearly moved to the app. (livemint.com)
