India’s unemployment rate decreased to 5.1% in July 2026, marking an improvement driven largely by rural employment growth and increased female workforce participation, according to the latest government survey.
India’s unemployment rate eased to 5.1% in July 2026 from 5.5% in June, according to the latest monthly labour force survey released by the National Statistics Office. The improvement was driven mainly by rural India, where the jobless rate fell to 4.5% from 5.0% a month earlier, while the urban rate was little changed at 6.7%. Compared with July 2025, the overall rate was broadly flat, though the urban rate was lower by 0.5 percentage points.
The survey, part of the Periodic Labour Force Survey, covered 371,021 people and is the 16th monthly bulletin in the series. It also showed that the labour force participation rate rose to 55.4% in July from 54.4% in June, reversing the flat trend seen in the previous month after declines from March through May. In rural areas, participation climbed more sharply to 58.0% from 56.6%, while the urban rate edged up to 50.4% from 50.1%.
Female participation improved noticeably in July, with the overall rate rising to 34.4% from 32.7% in June. Rural female participation increased to 38.8% from 36.6%, and the urban figure edged up to 25.3% from 24.8%. The report also said the worker population ratio, a measure of the share of people who are employed, improved to 52.5% from 51.4%, with rural women recording the strongest monthly gain.
Men also saw some improvement. The overall male unemployment rate fell to 5.0% from 5.3% in June, while the rural male rate eased to 4.6% from 4.9%. Urban male unemployment stayed broadly steady month on month but was down from a year earlier. By contrast, urban female unemployment rose to 8.8% from 8.4% in June, even as the broader female jobless rate remained below the level seen a year ago.
