Indian gold prices rise amid global volatility and summer swings

Gold rates across major Indian cities increased on August 17, reflecting ongoing volatility driven by global economic factors, local demand, and geopolitical tensions, with prices fluctuating sharply through the summer.

Gold prices in India edged higher on August 17, with rates rising across major cities, according to The Hindu BusinessLine. The latest quote showed 22-carat gold at ₹14,320 per gram nationwide, while 24-carat prices also moved up in step across the country.

In Mumbai, 22-carat gold was priced at ₹14,320 per gram and 24-carat gold at ₹15,036. Chennai and Hyderabad were slightly lower, with 22-carat gold at ₹14,270 per gram and 24-carat gold at ₹14,984 for 24-carat. Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata all posted firmer rates as well, with Kolkata among the priciest markets at ₹14,420 for 22-carat gold and ₹15,141 for 24-carat.

The broader backdrop has been volatile. Financial Express reported in February that Indian gold prices slipped 1.23% from the previous close, with traders watching the US dollar, international spot prices and import duties. More recently, market updates in July from Angel One, ABP Live and Upstox pointed to a mix of domestic demand, global interest-rate expectations and geopolitical tensions as key drivers of day-to-day swings.

Live rate trackers also suggest that prices have been moving sharply through the summer. GoldRateTodayLive.in showed the national 24-carat rate at ₹14,422 per gram on August 1, underscoring how quickly bullion prices can shift. For jewellery buyers, that means city-wise quotes remain worth checking closely before making a purchase, especially as local premiums and changes in the international market can quickly alter final costs.
