Pulse Energy becomes frontline enabler for India’s first interoperable EV charging network

Pulse Energy is among the first technology enablers certified for Unified Bharat eCharge, a revolutionary interoperable EV charging network backed by India’s government, streamlining payment and discovery across over 10,000 chargers nationwide.

Pulse Energy has become one of the first certified technology enablers for Unified Bharat eCharge, a new interoperable electric vehicle charging network backed by India’s Ministry of Heavy Industries, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited and the National Payments Corporation of India. The scheme is designed to let drivers find participating chargers and pay through BHIM UPI without juggling multiple apps, separate log-ins or operator-specific wallets.

The initial rollout is already linked to more than 10,000 chargers, according to the company, with participating points being added across cities and national highways. Through the BHIM app, a driver can locate a UBC-enabled charger, scan a QR code and settle the session directly from a bank account via UPI. The launch was timed to coincide with India’s 80th Independence Day.

The move is intended to ease one of the biggest frictions in India’s EV market: a fragmented charging landscape in which users often have to move between different platforms as they travel. The UBC system, built as digital public infrastructure on the open Beckn protocol, is meant to create a common layer for discovery, charging and payment. NPCI BHIM chief executive Lalitha Nataraj said the aim was to remove the need for multiple apps and wallet loading, while Pulse Energy co-founder and chief executive Akhil Jayaprakash said drivers should not have to think about which network they are using before plugging in.

Pulse Energy said it already works with more than 100 charge point operator partners and will help operators connect existing hardware to the UBC network while keeping their own brands intact. The company also plans to support other app providers in the payments, mobility and automotive sectors, and has set up a feedback channel through unifiedbharatecharge.com for users to suggest features and report issues.
