Digital and doorstep options transform life certificate process for millions of EPS-95 pensioners

New flexible methods for submitting the annual life certificate aim to ease the process for millions of EPS-95 pensioners, ensuring uninterrupted benefits amid digital advancements.

For millions of EPS-95 pensioners, the annual life certificate is more than a formality: it is the document that keeps monthly payments flowing. The certificate, also called Jeevan Pramaan Patra, confirms that the pensioner is alive and still eligible for benefits. According to Goodreturns, failure to renew it on time can lead to a temporary halt in pension credit, putting added strain on households that rely on the money for rent, food, utilities and medical bills.

Government data cited by Goodreturns show that 85,84,604 pensioners were drawing Employees’ Pension Scheme benefits as of March 31, 2026, with Rs 15,819.28 crore paid out under the scheme up to that date. That scale underlines why even a short delay in verification can create problems for a large number of families. The key point is that the validity period runs for 12 months from the date the previous certificate was submitted, rather than from a fixed annual deadline for everyone.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has also made the process more flexible. LiveMint reported that pensioners can submit their digital life certificate at any time, and that it remains valid for one year from the date of submission. That means retirees do not need to wait for a specific month, but they do need to keep track of when their last successful submission was accepted. If the certificate expires, pension payments may be paused until verification is completed, although the pension entitlement itself is not usually lost.

For those who cannot easily visit a bank or post office, digital and doorstep options are available. Goodreturns said pensioners can use Aadhaar-based face authentication on a compatible smartphone to generate a Digital Life Certificate, while The Economic Times reported that postal staff can also help with doorstep submission, with a call to 033-22029000 arranging a visit in some cases. Outlook Money also reported that EPFO-backed doorstep digital life certificate services are available for eligible EPS-95 pensioners, giving older beneficiaries a practical alternative to standing in queues.
