Cochin Shipyard’s earnings growth hampered by rising costs despite revenue boost

Cochin Shipyard reports a 19.4% decline in net profit for Q1 June 2026, as rising costs overshadow revenue growth and margin compression signals ongoing sector challenges.

Cochin Shipyard has reported a weaker first quarter, with consolidated net profit falling 19.4% year on year to Rs 151.5 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, even as revenue edged up 2.3% to Rs 1,094 crore, according to an exchange filing and market data compiled by LiveMint. The company’s operating performance softened more sharply, with EBITDA dropping 20.4% to Rs 193 crore and the margin narrowing to 17.6% from 22.7% a year earlier.

The figures suggest that higher costs outweighed the modest gain in sales. Cochin Shipyard’s total income rose to about Rs 1,161 crore from Rs 1,123 crore in the same period last year, but total expenses climbed to roughly Rs 959 crore from Rs 873 crore, leaving profit before tax at about Rs 202.5 crore, down from Rs 249.5 crore.

The latest quarter continues a mixed run for India’s shipbuilding names. Kotak Neo’s results page shows Cochin Shipyard had previously posted a 31.3% year-on-year revenue increase in Q1 FY26, underscoring how uneven quarterly comparisons can be in the sector. Other listed defence and industrial manufacturers have also been dealing with margin pressure despite revenue growth, with recent updates from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Larsen & Toubro pointing to similar cost-related strain.

For investors, the main takeaway is that Cochin Shipyard is still growing, but not yet converting that growth into stronger earnings. The company’s modest top-line increase was not enough to offset the squeeze on operating profitability, leaving the June quarter weaker than the market may have hoped.
