HDFC Life's LiveWell Rider enhances customisable protection with wellness and accident benefits

HDFC Life introduces the LiveWell Rider, offering policyholders tailored coverage options that combine protection with wellness services, alongside expansive accident and disability benefits.

HDFC Life’s LiveWell Rider is an optional extra that sits on top of an eligible base policy, giving customers a way to add cover for risks that a standard life plan may not fully address. HDFC Life says riders can be attached either at the start of a policy or later on a premium due date, subject to the plan rules, and the company positions them as a way to tailor protection without buying a separate policy. According to HDFC Life, the rider is designed to combine financial support with wellness services.

The rider is offered in linked and non-linked versions, and the difference matters. HDFC Life’s own material shows that the linked version is meant for unit-linked insurance plans, while the non-linked version is tied to term, endowment and other traditional policies. That split affects the available options: both versions can include death cover with terminal illness, accidental death cover and personal accident protection, but the non-linked version also has a policy continuance feature, while the linked version instead offers daily hospital cash and surgical care.

On the accident side, the personal accident cover is the most expansive element. HDFC Life says total permanent disability can trigger monthly payments equal to 1% of the rider sum assured for 10 years, while partial permanent disability pays a percentage based on severity. The company also offers optional add-ons such as return of premium, double benefit in certain transport- and fire-related accidents, and an accident plus feature that helps with home or vehicle modifications and therapy costs after an accepted disability claim.

The rider’s wellness benefits are intended to make it more than a pure protection product. HDFC Life says eligible customers can use the programme for outpatient consultations, prescribed diagnostics, teleconsultations, preventive check-ups and healthy-living rewards, with some benefits worth up to 100% of the annual rider premium. The insurer also says the network includes more than 100,000 doctors, 500 hospitals and 362 laboratories. Family members can be included through the wellness app, although a waiting period applies.

Even so, the value depends on how the rider is used. HDFC Life’s guidance and its educational material on riders both stress that these add-ons can be a cost-effective way to fill gaps such as disability, accident and illness-related expenses. But because the linked and non-linked brochures differ, customers need to check the correct document for their policy before assuming every feature is available.
