The West Bengal government is in negotiations with Tata Group to attract fresh investments, signalling a bid to move beyond the past disputes linked to the Singur land controversy and revitalise the state’s industrial landscape.
West Bengal is holding talks with the Tata Group about new investment plans in the state, Industry Minister Tapas Roy said on Sunday, as the government looks to draw the conglomerate back in after the bruising Singur dispute that drove Tata Motors out nearly two decades ago, according to NDTV Profit. Roy said discussions were under way to bring the group back and suggested the state was open to projects beyond cars.
The minister said Tata already has a footprint in West Bengal across technology services, metals, hospitality and retail, and that the government is interested in whether those businesses can be expanded or whether new units can be set up, NDTV Profit reported. The outreach marks a broader attempt to revive industrial activity in a state that has long struggled to shake off the legacy of the Singur controversy.
Tata Motors withdrew its Nano project from Singur in October 2008 after prolonged protests over land acquisition and shifted the plan to Sanand in Gujarat. The dispute has continued to echo through the courts: Business Standard reported that an arbitral tribunal awarded Tata Motors ₹765.78 crore plus interest in 2023, while the Calcutta High Court later declined to grant an unconditional stay on that award, giving the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation a limited window to secure the amount.
Roy declined to discuss how the state might deal with the payment obligation, according to NDTV Profit, saying only that such issues still needed to be considered. The renewed talks suggest officials are trying to separate future investment pitches from the unresolved financial and political fallout of one of West Bengal’s most famous industrial setbacks.
