Mamta Kumari, a former deputy branch manager, is accused of misusing her position to orchestrate unauthorised transactions, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities in the banking sector amid wider investigations into financial scams across India.
Police in West Bengal have arrested Mamta Kumari, the former deputy branch manager of ICICI Bank’s Chetla branch, over allegations that she cheated a customer out of about ₹7.8 lakh, according to Aaj Tak. Investigators say the alleged fraud took place in December 2023, when Kumari is accused of misusing her position at the bank to carry out unauthorised transactions.
According to the report, the case centres on two alleged acts: the theft of a customer’s credit card and purchases worth roughly ₹1 lakh made without consent, and the withdrawal of ₹6.8 lakh from a fixed deposit using forged signatures. Police traced Kumari to Ballia in Uttar Pradesh and arrested her there on August 8.
She has since been brought to West Bengal on transit remand and is being questioned further, with officers seeking to recover the money allegedly taken from the customer. A court in Alipur is expected to hear the matter next, and police are likely to seek custody for extended questioning.
The arrest comes as ICICI Bank has faced other fraud-related scrutiny elsewhere in the country. In Nagpur, the Economic Offences Wing has widened an inquiry into a ₹23 crore fake gold loan scam and has been examining the possible role of nearly 10 former branch managers, while separate reports have described arrests in connection with the case. Those investigations involve different allegations, but they underline the wider pressure on banks to tighten internal controls and detect misuse before losses mount.
