Taxpayers awaiting refunds should check for common issues such as unvalidated bank accounts, incorrect details, or return errors. The official portal provides tools to track the status and ensure smooth processing.
If an income tax refund has not reached your account after filing an Income Tax Return, the delay is not always caused by slow processing alone. According to guidance on the Income Tax Department’s official portal, a refund can remain pending until the return has been fully processed, and the status may simply show that the return is still under review.
One common problem is a bank account issue. The department sends refunds directly to the taxpayer’s account, so an account that has not been pre-validated, is not linked to PAN or contains incorrect details can block payment. The official help pages also note that taxpayers should make sure their bank details are accurate before expecting the refund.
Errors in the return itself can also hold things up. If the account number, IFSC code, income figures or tax deducted at source details are entered incorrectly, the refund may be delayed while the return is examined more closely. If the mistake is significant, a revised return may be needed.
A mismatch between the tax credit shown in the return and the figures in Form 26AS or the Annual Information Statement can trigger further checks. In some cases, the department may also select the return for scrutiny or additional verification, which means the refund is released only after that review is finished and any notice is answered.
Taxpayers can check the position of their refund on the income tax e-filing portal by logging in, opening the e-File menu, selecting Income Tax Returns and then viewing the filed return for the relevant assessment year. The portal shows the return status, and if a refund has been issued, it will also display the transaction reference and payment details.
