Precious metals rally accelerates as easing tensions bolster safe-haven appeal

Gold and silver surge to their strongest weekly gains since early 2023 amid easing geopolitical tensions and falling oil prices, igniting fresh investor interest and speculation of further rises in the metals markets.

Gold and silver have surged sharply this week, extending a rally that has put fresh focus on precious metals as investors weigh easing geopolitical fears against still-elevated economic uncertainty. The move has been striking not only for its scale, but also for the mix of forces behind it: lower oil prices, shifting expectations around the US-Iran relationship and renewed interest in assets seen as hedges against inflation and currency risk.

According to market coverage from Hoka News, gold rose about 6.6% on the week to more than $4,300 an ounce, its strongest weekly gain since January, while silver climbed about 11.6% to above $64, its best week since February. Reuters-style market commentary would normally describe that as a classic safe-haven bid, but this rally has come alongside signs that some conflict risks may be easing rather than intensifying.

That unusual backdrop has led analysts to point to expectations around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. BullionVault reported that precious metals jumped on July 27 as crude prices fell after a pause in US-Iranian strikes, suggesting traders were pricing in the possibility that reduced pressure on energy supplies could help ease inflation while still leaving room for central banks to cut rates later. Lower borrowing costs tend to support non-yielding assets such as gold.

Silver has moved even faster than gold because it sits at the intersection of monetary demand and industrial use. Beyond its role as a store of value, silver is used in solar panels, electronics and other manufacturing sectors, so the metal can benefit both from investor caution and from expectations of stronger clean-energy demand. That combination has helped it outperform gold during the latest swing higher.

Some analysts now see room for further gains, although views differ on how far the rally can run. CBS News reported that experts are watching developments in Iran closely, with some forecasting gold could move towards $5,000 an ounce and silver as high as $68 if tensions continue to ease, while others expect a narrower trading range. Meanwhile, Investing.com reported on August 2 that gold had climbed above $5,000 and silver had risen to $82.55 after a volatile week, underscoring how quickly sentiment has shifted in the metals market.
