Milky Mist prepares to raise over ₹1,550 crore to expand value-added dairy operations

South India’s largest paneer brand, Milky Mist, announces a ₹1,553 crore IPO to fund capacity expansion, modernising facilities and strengthening distribution, as it seeks to carve further into premium dairy markets.

Milky Mist Dairy Foods is set to open a ₹1,553 crore initial public offering on August 11, with the issue scheduled to close on August 13, according to the company’s prospectus. Anchor investor bidding is due on August 10, the allotment is expected on August 14 and shares are proposed to list on the BSE and NSE on August 18.

The offering comes after a larger draft plan and a pre-IPO funding round completed in May, when Jongsong Investments, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Temasek Holdings, invested ₹482 crore. Market filings and IPO trackers said the company had earlier sought to raise as much as ₹2,035 crore, while the final issue is expected to value the business at roughly ₹10,310 crore to ₹10,778 crore.

According to the prospectus and related market reports, most of the fresh money will go towards expanding and modernising Milky Mist’s facility in Perundurai, Tamil Nadu, as well as reducing debt. The company plans new capacity for whey protein concentrate, yoghurt and cream cheese, products that sit at the higher end of the dairy market and usually carry better margins than liquid milk.

Milky Mist has built its brand around value-added dairy rather than plain milk. Founded in Erode, Tamil Nadu, the company sells paneer, cheese, curd, butter, ghee, ice cream and other processed products, and its own website says it has more than 400 items in its range. IPO market data also describes Milky Mist as South India’s largest paneer brand, with distribution across more than 600,000 retail outlets and revenue of about ₹3,500 crore in FY24.

The company also intends to use part of the proceeds to widen cold-chain distribution, including the deployment of visi coolers, ice cream freezers and chocolate coolers across its sales network. If the flotation goes ahead as planned, Milky Mist will join listed dairy names such as Parag Milk Foods, Hatsun Agro Product and Dodla Dairy, while giving the company fresh capital to push further into premium dairy categories.
