India’s campus recruitment shifts towards AI and skills-first hiring in 2026

Freshers entering India’s campus recruitment season are encountering a transformative shift, with roles in AI, automation, and digital transformation overtaking traditional entry points, reflecting a skills-first approach from employers.

Freshers entering India’s campus recruitment season are finding that the fastest-growing opportunities are not always in the jobs they trained for. According to TeamLease EdTech’s career outlook report, companies’ intent to hire new graduates has risen to 73%, but the bigger shift is in the type of work on offer: roles tied to artificial intelligence, automation, cloud systems and digital transformation are replacing many of the old familiar entry points. That move is also reshaping the rules of hiring, with employers increasingly taking a skills-first approach rather than focusing only on degrees.

Marketing is among the clearest examples of that change. In the first half of 2026, fresher hiring intent in India’s marketing and advertising sector jumped to 62% from 11% a year earlier, according to industry data cited by newkerala.com. The strongest demand is now for roles that combine AI, analytics and digital operations, including positions such as AI marketing associate and digital campaign analyst. Cities including Pune and Hyderabad are emerging as key centres for ad-tech and analytics recruitment.

One of the most striking new openings is for AI marketing associates. These are graduates who can work with AI-based marketing tools from the outset, using them to run campaigns, analyse data and monitor performance. The role reflects how quickly marketing teams have shifted towards measurable, technology-led work, with Bengaluru, Delhi and Kochi described as major demand centres.

Another fast-rising role is junior DevOps engineer, a post that would have been largely inaccessible to freshers only a few years ago. DevOps now remains one of India’s stronger technology career tracks, with demand for people skilled in deployment automation, cloud infrastructure and release management still outstripping supply, according to recent industry write-ups. Bengaluru, Mumbai and Coimbatore are among the cities where campus hiring is strongest, and candidates with knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, Linux and cloud fundamentals are seeing the best opportunities.

The same pattern is visible in web development, where no-code website developers are becoming more common. Instead of traditional coding-heavy workflows, companies are increasingly looking for graduates who can build websites and apps using no-code platforms while understanding UI/UX and digital problem-solving. Manufacturing and marketing firms are among those hiring for the role, with Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad highlighted as important hubs.

Customer support is also being rebuilt around AI. AI chatbot support engineers are now being hired to maintain and improve automated service systems, combining technical troubleshooting with conversational AI management. In the power sector, meanwhile, hiring intent has reached 72% as firms expand renewable and hybrid energy infrastructure, creating demand for smart grid automation technicians. For graduates, the message from employers is increasingly blunt: the most valuable qualification is no longer just a degree, but the ability to work with the tools shaping the next wave of jobs.
