Fortis Malar Hospitals shifts from hospital operator to cash shell amid sharp income decline

Fortis Malar Hospitals faces a significant downturn with its income plummeting by 88.3% year-on-year, reflecting a shift from active hospital operations to a cash shell following its sale to MGM Healthcare, highlighting the volatility in its recent transition.

Fortis Malar Hospitals reported a sharp fall in income in the quarter to June 2026, underlining how far the company has moved from its earlier operating model. Total income came in at ₹0.54 crore, down 18.2% from the previous quarter and 88.3% lower than a year earlier, according to figures compiled from the company’s quarterly results. Expenses were also lower at ₹0.34 crore, but the reduction was not enough to offset the steep drop in turnover.

The latest numbers came after a difficult run through fiscal 2026. Business Standard reported that Fortis Malar posted no sales in the March 2026 quarter and recorded a consolidated net loss of ₹0.05 crore, reversing a profit of ₹0.36 crore in the previous quarter. Even so, the company still ended the full year with a net profit of ₹4.14 crore, helped by non-operating income rather than hospital operations.

That pattern reflects a more fundamental change in the business. Reports from Whalesbook said Fortis Malar ceased operations after a slump sale to MGM Healthcare Private Limited on February 1, 2024, effectively leaving the listed company as a cash shell. In that context, the swings in quarterly revenue and profit appear to reflect residual or non-operating items rather than an active hospital business.

The company’s recent results also show how volatile the transition has been. Kotak Neo data showed revenues rising sequentially in the March 2026 quarter but still falling year on year, while expenses climbed sharply and profit weakened. Business Standard later said the December 2025 quarter produced only a marginal profit with no sales at all, reinforcing the view that Fortis Malar’s reported earnings are now driven by a much smaller base than in its operating days.
