India’s CyberDost issues alert about counterfeit loan applications mimicking legitimate lenders to harvest personal data, urging users to verify app credibility before granting permissions.
CyberDost, the cyber safety arm of India’s I4C, has warned smartphone users to be wary of fake loan apps that imitate legitimate lenders while quietly harvesting personal data and device permissions. In a post on X on August 6, the account named NexusLoan, Future Loan, CrediFactor and Credit Prairie as examples of apps that it says are fraudulent. The warning comes as online lending continues to attract users looking for quick credit, creating fertile ground for scams that can be disguised as genuine financial services.
According to CyberDost, the safest first step before installing any loan app is to check the developer and company details carefully and confirm that the lender is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India. It also urged users to read reviews closely for signs of suspicious behaviour, rather than relying on a polished interface or a convincing name alone. That advice echoes broader anti-fraud guidance from regulators and consumer protection agencies, which routinely stress that scams often succeed by copying the appearance of trusted brands.
The platform also told users not to hand over sensitive personal documents without verifying the app’s legitimacy and to avoid granting unnecessary permissions. Fraudulent apps can exploit access to contacts, files and other phone data, turning a simple loan enquiry into a wider privacy risk. Consumer watchdogs in other jurisdictions give similar advice when checking for fake goods or impersonation scams: verify the source, inspect the details and be sceptical of anything that feels unusually urgent, cheap or plausible.
Anyone who has already downloaded a suspicious app or fallen victim to a scam should act quickly, CyberDost said. It advised calling 1930 to report cyber fraud in India and filing a complaint through cybercrime.gov.in. The message is simple: the promise of instant credit can carry a heavy cost if users do not pause to verify who is really behind the offer.
