Small finance banks like Jana and Suryoday are offering senior citizens fixed deposit returns above 8%, disrupting the traditional dominance of larger private and state-owned banks in senior savings strategies.
Small finance banks are still leading the pack for senior citizens seeking the best fixed deposit returns, with the latest rate cards showing returns above 8% on selected five-year deposits. According to Paisabazaar’s updated product pages, Suryoday Small Finance Bank is offering up to 8.25% a year for senior citizens, while Jana Small Finance Bank is offering up to 8.30% a year across its fixed deposit range. Both banks also have tax-saver fixed deposits that sit close to the 8% mark.
By comparison, larger private and state-owned lenders remain below that level in the figures cited by Informalnewz. The publication said State Bank of India’s senior citizen rate goes up to 7.05%, while Punjab National Bank is offering 6.85% on five-year deposits. It added that HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are also in the mid-6% to low-7% range, reinforcing how small finance banks have become the main destination for older savers chasing income.
The gap is not new. Jana Small Finance Bank’s own disclosures have repeatedly shown aggressive deposit pricing, and its public materials have listed senior citizen rates well above those of large banks in past rate cycles. More recent third-party rate trackers, however, are the better guide for current comparisons, and they show that the bank is still among the strongest offers available to older depositors.
For savers, the appeal is straightforward: fixed deposits provide predictable returns, and senior citizens often receive a higher rate than ordinary customers. But the best-looking headline rate is not the only factor to weigh. Deposit size limits, tenure, and tax treatment all matter, and the highest yields are often available only on specific terms or up to certain account thresholds.
