Seafarers advised to prioritise security when starting mutual fund investments amid digital risks

Seafarers looking to invest in mutual funds are advised to stick to recognised online platforms and avoid sharing sensitive information over insecure messaging apps, with guidance highlighting the importance of security and choosing suitable plans for remote management.

For seafarers looking to begin investing in mutual funds, the first priority is security. Merchant Navy Decoded advises avoiding random links sent over WhatsApp or Telegram and never entering PAN, Aadhaar, bank details or one-time passwords on unfamiliar websites. Instead, it says investors should stick to recognised routes such as the official websites of fund houses, MF Central and MF Utility, or work through a trusted adviser if they want help choosing a regular plan.

The appeal of those platforms is convenience as much as safety. According to the guide, MF Central lets investors see holdings across multiple mutual funds in one place, while MF Utility offers a Common Account Number, which makes it easier to transact in participating schemes through a single platform. That can matter for seafarers, who may be at sea, dealing with slow internet and unable to correct errors quickly.

The guide also stresses the difference between direct and regular plans. According to the Association of Mutual Funds in India, both sit within the same scheme, hold the same portfolio and are run by the same fund manager, but direct plans usually carry lower expense ratios because they exclude distribution commissions. Mint, INDmoney, EquitiesIndia and HDFC Mutual Fund all make the same point: direct plans suit investors who want to manage the process themselves, while regular plans are better for those who want advice and hand-holding. For seafarers, the practical choice depends on how confident they are in researching funds and managing investments from afar.
