State Bank of India’s new Har Ghar Lakhpati plan offers a fixed, low-risk way for savers to accumulate ₹1 lakh or more over 3 to 10 years with modest monthly investments, catering to retail customers aiming for disciplined saving for future goals.
State Bank of India’s Har Ghar Lakhpati plan is a recurring deposit designed to help savers build a corpus of ₹1 lakh or more through fixed monthly instalments. According to SBI, the product runs for 3 to 10 years and is aimed at people who want a disciplined way to set aside money for goals such as education, marriage or other planned expenses without exposure to market risk.
The bank says the scheme is open to all resident individuals, including minors aged 10 and above who can sign independently. Parents or legal guardians may also open accounts on behalf of younger children. The structure is simple: the customer chooses a target maturity amount and tenure, then pays a monthly amount that is calculated to reach that goal.
SBI’s examples show how even modest savings can add up over time. A deposit of ₹600 a month for 10 years, it says, could grow to about ₹1.10 lakh, including interest. Reports on the launch of the scheme in January 2025 said SBI introduced Har Ghar Lakhpati alongside a separate fixed deposit product called SBI Patrons, with both aimed at widening access to low-risk savings options.
Interest rates vary by tenure and customer category. SBI’s scheme page says rates for general customers differ across the 3- to 10-year range, while senior citizens receive an additional 0.50 percentage point. The bank also offers premium rates for staff and retired employees. Early withdrawals are allowed, but penalties apply, and no interest is paid if the account is closed within 7 days. SBI also says tax deducted at source and other income tax rules apply to the interest earned.
For households looking for a predictable way to save, the scheme offers a straightforward proposition: regular deposits, a fixed end goal and no equity-market volatility. That makes it most suitable for people who value certainty and can stay invested for the full term rather than those who may need immediate access to their money.
