Taxpayers can now monitor their income tax refunds in real-time through official online portals, making the process more transparent and reducing reliance on office visits or guesswork.
Taxpayers waiting for an income tax refund can now track it online rather than relying on office visits or guesswork. According to guidance on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal, the refund status can be checked after a return has been filed and verified, giving taxpayers a live view of where the claim stands.
The department says the quickest route is through the e-filing account. After logging in, users can open the e-File section, choose Income Tax Returns and then View Filed Returns to see the return and refund status. An alternative is the NSDL, now Protean, refund portal, which lets people check progress without signing in to the tax website by entering a PAN number, assessment year and captcha code.
An income tax refund is simply the excess tax paid during the year, whether through tax deducted at source, advance tax or another payment. The refund is issued only after the return has been filed and electronically verified. DBS Bank notes that taxpayers can also watch for refund updates through bank account alerts and email or SMS messages, while ensuring that bank details are correct and PAN is linked with Aadhaar to reduce processing problems.
Delays are still possible. According to guides published by Mint and the Economic Times, common reasons include missing verification, incorrect bank details or mismatches in the tax data. Refunds are often processed within a few weeks after verification, but if the money does not arrive within the expected time, taxpayers are advised to check the status again and look for any messages from the tax department about errors or reprocessing.
