Life insurance buyers in India get 30 days to cancel policies that fall short

IRDAI rules give policyholders 30 days from receiving a policy document to review the terms and request cancellation, with refunds subject to limited deductions and a seven-day processing deadline.

For life insurance policies with a term of at least one year, the free-look period gives buyers a 30-day window to review the contract after receiving it, whether the policy arrives electronically or on paper. The rules, set out in the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s 2024 policyholder protection regulations, apply no matter how the cover was sold. In practical terms, the clock starts when the policy document is delivered, giving the customer time to check whether the plan matches what was promised and whether the terms are acceptable.

If the policyholder is unhappy with the wording, coverage or other conditions, they can return the policy for cancellation during that period, provided no claim has been made. The request must explain why the customer wants to walk away. Industry guidance and insurer-specific policy documents show that this is designed as a consumer protection measure, not a casual try-before-you-buy option. Insurers also urge customers to examine the benefit illustration, personal details and policy wording carefully before buying, rather than relying on the free-look window as a substitute for due diligence.

A refund is normally due if the policy is cancelled within the review period, but the amount can be reduced by limited deductions. The permitted charges include proportionate risk premium for the time the cover was in force, medical examination expenses and stamp duty, where applicable. For linked insurance products, the insurer must also repurchase units at the net asset value on the cancellation date, subject to the relevant deductions. The regulations say the insurer must process the refund within seven days of receiving the cancellation request, and some insurer FAQs say the practical turnaround may be even faster once verification is complete.

Several life insurers spell out the same framework in their own policy documents. Product contracts from companies such as ICICI Prudential and Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance also describe a 30-day review period, the need to return the policy with reasons for cancellation and the same broad categories of deductions. LIC’s Smart Pension group policy document likewise refers to a 30-day free-look option for the master policyholder. Together, the rules and product documents show that the free-look period is intended to give policyholders a clear exit route if a policy does not measure up to expectations.
