India’s finance ministry emphasizes a streamlined, time-bound grievance process for insurance customers, reinforcing the role of the IRDAI portal as a central route for resolution and increased accountability for insurers.
India’s finance ministry has reminded insurance customers that they should begin any complaint by taking it to their insurer, before escalating unresolved cases to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India.
According to the advisory reported on Friday, the regulator requires insurers to follow a time-bound grievance process for problems ranging from rejected claims and delays to alleged mis-selling and service failures. Every insurer must appoint a grievance redressal officer, while a board-level policyholders’ committee is meant to oversee the handling of complaints. The ministry said complaints must be acknowledged immediately and resolved within 14 days.
IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa system is the central route for tracking complaints across the insurance sector. The regulator says policyholders should first contact the insurer’s complaints cell, then move to IRDAI’s grievance cell if the response is delayed or unsatisfactory. Complaints can be filed through the portal, by email, by post or through the toll-free helpline, and the authority’s call centre offers support in 12 languages. Independent IRDAI pages also describe the integrated complaint-management system as a channel for registering and monitoring grievances from insurers’ digital platforms, emails, letters and phone calls.
The portal has become increasingly important as insurance uptake rises in India and customers seek a clearer path through disputes over claims, refunds and policy servicing. According to IRDAI’s consumer-affairs material, the system is designed to create a central record of grievances and to help monitor how insurers respond, while also giving the regulator a route to step in where necessary.
