The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has made biometric Aadhaar authentication mandatory for domestic LPG users of Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, with the process intended to tighten subsidy delivery and curb misuse. NDTV reported that consumers can complete the check from home through company apps and the Aadhaar FaceRD app, while local notices in states such as Meghalaya have warned that e-KYC is required to keep services running smoothly.
The practical impact is already being felt in some places. The Times of India reported that consumers in Kolkata were warned to complete e-KYC by August 16 to retain subsidised household supply, and Moneycontrol said more than 50,000 LPG holders in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, faced possible supply disruption if they did not comply. In Bengal, the current domestic price for a 14.2-kg cylinder is Rs 968, according to the reports, while the All India LPG Distributors Federation has suggested that customers who miss the deadline could be shifted to commercial pricing, although the companies have not publicly confirmed any new tariff for non-compliant users.
GoodReturns reported that Indian Oil had told customers that failure to complete e-KYC by August 16 would make them ineligible for domestic rates until the process was completed. The same report said the deadline may now have been pushed to August 23 because of server problems and heavy demand, which would mean some users are still trying to complete the formalities. For now, the safest course for consumers is to contact their distributor or oil company directly and complete the verification as soon as possible.
