Assembling a comprehensive insurance record in advance can help Greek workers verify contributions, identify gaps, and prevent delays or errors in pension payments, amid ongoing digitisation efforts.
For workers nearing retirement, the decisive step is often not filing the pension claim itself but assembling the insurance record well in advance. Greek social security lawyers say a pre-retirement certificate can help verify the full contribution history, identify missing periods and reduce the risk of delays, errors or lower-than-expected payments once the pension application is submitted.
The certificate is available through e-ΕΦΚΑ and the Greek state portal, where applicants use their Taxisnet credentials, tax number, social security number and contact details. Officials recommend submitting the request within the last 2 years before reaching pension age so that the agency has time to check the record and confirm insurance periods across the worker’s career, especially where more than one former fund is involved.
That early review matters because many pension files still depend on older paper records, particularly for work carried out years ago or in funds that no longer exist. According to the lead report, e-ΕΦΚΑ services have repeatedly had to trace missing stamps through employer certificates, insurance booklets, payroll statements and older employment contracts. In practice, these searches can take time, but they may also increase the verified contribution period and, in turn, the final pension amount.
The issue is especially important for people with parallel or successive insurance, where contributions may be spread across different schemes. It is also relevant for self-employed workers, who may discover overdue social security debts only late in the process. If those liabilities are not settled through repayment or a formal arrangement, they can block pension approval. The government’s digital ATLAS pension system has sped up some cases by automating parts of the process, but full digitisation of insurance records is still a work in progress.
