EPFO gives employers until 31 October to adjust payrolls to higher wage cap

Employers have until 31 October to file September returns and pay contributions after the mandatory coverage ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, requiring payroll checks for the month.

Employers have until 31 October to file September 2026 Electronic Challan-cum-Return forms and deposit provident fund contributions, after the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation granted extra time to cope with changes to the statutory wage ceiling. According to reporting by Outlook Money and Moneycontrol, the extension moved the filing date from 15 October to the end of the month, giving businesses more room to complete payroll adjustments and compliance work tied to the revised rules.

The change follows the government’s decision to lift the monthly wage ceiling for mandatory provident fund coverage from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, effective 17 September 2026. A Press Information Bureau release said the higher threshold was intended to widen social security coverage for more workers, while EPFO’s own guidance describes the ECR as the monthly employer return used to report employee-wise wages and contributions under the Employees’ Provident Fund, the Employees’ Pension Scheme and the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance scheme.

Because the ceiling changed part-way through September, employers have had to review payroll records carefully and make sure contributions are calculated correctly for each employee. Moneycontrol reported that the new cap does not automatically mean every worker’s contribution must be worked out on ₹25,000; rather, employers need to check whether individual employees fall within the updated mandatory coverage rules and then apply the right contribution amounts.

EPFO’s online filing process requires employers to log in to the employer portal, upload the return for the relevant wage month, validate the data and then generate a challan for payment. The organisation’s FAQs explain that the return and payment steps are linked: once the ECR is uploaded in the prescribed format, the system produces the challan for remittance. Officials have urged establishments to file early to avoid portal congestion and technical problems, a point echoed in a PIB advisory from the Raipur office, which said employers should not wait until the last day.

Missing the deadline can invite compliance action, including interest and damages on delayed statutory payments. For employees, the relevant check is whether September contributions appear in their EPF passbooks after the employer has completed the filing process. If they do not, payroll departments should be contacted promptly, especially as 31 October is the final day covered by the current extension.
