EPFO begins local settlement of provident fund claims in Ladakh, easing access for remote subscribers

For the first time, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has started settling claims locally in Leh, Ladakh, significantly reducing the logistical burden for over 7,800 subscribers in one of India’s most remote regions, and accelerating claims processing across the country.

For the first time, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has begun settling provident fund claims for Ladakh from Leh, a move that officials say should make a long-distance process far more manageable for subscribers in one of India’s most remote regions. According to Greater Kashmir, 42 claims worth Rs 14,32,574 have already been processed locally, ending the earlier practice under which Ladakh cases were routed through Jammu, more than 650 kilometres away.

The shift matters in practical terms because EPFO members in Ladakh have faced a geographic burden that went beyond routine paperwork. The organisation says the local arrangement should reduce reliance on the Jammu regional office and improve access for more than 7,800 subscribers and 2,700 establishments in the Union Territory. Additional Central Provident Fund Commissioner Ajay K Mehra said the change would improve efficiency and widen access to services, while also supporting government-backed initiatives such as Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, Vishwas and the Employees’ Enrolment Campaign 2026.

The Leh rollout also fits into a wider push by EPFO to speed up claims across the country. Livemint reported that the organisation has set a 20-day target for settling provident fund and pension claims, with a 12% annual penal interest potentially triggered by delays. The same publication said EPFO has also been working through technical issues linked to its upgraded CITES 2.01 platform, while a separate report said the agency has been testing a UPI-linked claim settlement facility and another initiative aimed at processing eligible withdrawals within 3 days.

Beyond claims processing, officials in Ladakh are now looking at infrastructure upgrades that could make the service more self-contained. Greater Kashmir reported that EPFO is planning to phase up the Regional Office in Ladakh and acquire a new building with member-focused facilities, including an air-conditioned waiting area. Mehra also thanked regional officials in Jammu and Ladakh for putting the local settlement system in place, underscoring that the change is as much about administration as it is about geography.
