Taxpayers who filed their income tax return on 17 July must verify their submissions by 16 August using online methods such as Aadhaar OTP or risk having their returns invalidated, delaying refunds and complicating compliance.
Taxpayers who filed their income tax return on 17 July face a hard stop on 16 August to complete verification, as the filing must be e-verified within 30 days or it may be treated as invalid. The rule matters because an unverified return can delay refunds and create compliance problems, making prompt action the safest option for anyone who has not yet finished the process.
India’s National Government Services Portal says the return can be verified fully online in under two minutes using Aadhaar one-time password, electronic verification code or net banking. The Income Tax Department’s own guidance also says taxpayers can check the status of a filed return and see whether it is still pending verification through the e-filing portal.
The department and tax reporting from The Economic Times say there are several ways to complete the step, including Aadhaar OTP, net banking, a pre-validated bank account and, in some cases, a demat account. The key requirement is that the taxpayer’s mobile number, Aadhaar and bank details must match the records already linked to the tax profile, otherwise the OTP route may fail.
If digital verification is not possible, taxpayers can still submit a signed ITR-V form by post to the central processing centre. Tax advisers quoted by Mint have urged filers not to leave the process until the last minute, warning that late filing and verification increase the risk of avoidable errors and slower processing.
