Vadodara businessman loses Rs 90,000 after alleged bank app update scam

A Vadodara businessman reports a Rs 90,000 loss following a suspicious branch visit where staff allegedly prompted him to update his bank app, raising concerns over digital banking vulnerabilities.

A Vadodara businessman has filed a police complaint after claiming that Rs 90,000 disappeared from his Bank of Baroda account shortly after a branch visit in which staff allegedly urged him to install a new version of the lender’s mobile app.

Ajay Limbachiya, 45, who lives in Gotri and uses the bank’s app regularly for transfers and statement checks, said he went to the branch on 24 August 2025 because the application was not working properly. According to his complaint, an employee told him a newer version of the app had been released and should be downloaded immediately.

Limbachiya said the bank employee handled his phone, after which the device went through repeated system updates and remained unusable for about 90 minutes. He left the branch and later, while trying to make a payment in Bhayli, discovered that his balance had dropped to Rs 945 from Rs 90,945. The complaint says two unauthorised Google Pay transactions had been made, one for Rs 50,000 and another for Rs 40,000, each showing a different beneficiary name.

He returned to the bank and was told to approach the police. Limbachiya then contacted the cybercrime helpline and lodged a complaint at Lakshmipura police station, sharing beneficiary account numbers and IFSC details with investigators. The case comes against a backdrop of recurring concerns over Bank of Baroda’s digital services. In 2023, the lender denied allegations that employees had linked customer accounts to stray mobile numbers to inflate registrations on its Bob World app, while reports later that year said a forensic audit into alleged app-related fraud was still under way after Reserve Bank of India scrutiny. More recently, Bank of Baroda said in July that it had suffered a data breach involving a compromised employee email account, though it said core banking systems were not affected.
