Uttarakhand Gramin Bank and State Bank of India have partnered to broaden the reach of the National Pension System and retirement products, aiming to improve financial inclusion in rural and semi-urban Uttarakhand through a new multi-scheme distribution framework.
Uttarakhand Gramin Bank and State Bank of India have entered into an agreement aimed at widening access to the National Pension System and other retirement products across Uttarakhand, as both lenders look to push pension planning deeper into rural and semi-urban areas. The memorandum of understanding, signed under a Multi Scheme Framework distribution arrangement, is intended to make long-term savings products easier to reach through UGB’s branch network.
According to the banks, the partnership will give customers access to retirement planning options including Jeevan Swarna and Akshay Dhara. Krishna Kumar, a senior UGB officer, said the bank’s wide footprint should help bring these offerings to people in places where financial services remain harder to access and awareness about retirement planning is still limited.
The tie-up also fits with UGB’s wider role in the state’s banking network. The bank, which is sponsored by SBI, was formed in 2012 after the amalgamation of two regional rural banks in Uttarakhand. Its branches already handle a range of services linked to financial inclusion, including direct benefit transfers through Aadhaar-linked accounts and recurring payment facilities.
SBI has long positioned the National Pension System as a low-cost retirement product regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority. The scheme offers tiered accounts and, according to SBI, requires relatively modest minimum contributions, which may help explain why banks see it as a useful tool for drawing in first-time savers and workers outside formal pension coverage.
