Three held after fake e-challan SMS drains ₹1.35 lakh from Gurugram victim

Police say three men arrested in Gwalior supplied bank accounts used to route ₹70,000 from a Gurugram resident targeted through a fraudulent traffic-challan message.

Gurugram police have arrested three men in connection with a cyber fraud case involving fake e-challan SMS messages, after a complainant lost ₹1.35 lakh, according to police and local reporting. The arrests add to a string of recent crackdowns on online payment scams in and around Gurugram, where investigators have increasingly traced fraud proceeds through so-called mule accounts supplied by intermediaries.

Police said the victim received a message on 21 September claiming that traffic challan payment for his car was overdue and directing him to a link to settle it immediately. After he entered the requested details, money was siphoned from his bank account the next day. A case was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station West after he filed a complaint on 24 September, officials said.

A police team later detained the suspects from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday. They were identified as Rohit, 20, from Bhim Nagar; Krishna, 20, from Kamarpura; and Dheeraj, 25, from Shri Nagar Basti in Thatipur. During questioning, officers said, they found that ₹70,000 from the complainant’s account had been routed into one of the bank accounts supplied by the accused, who were allegedly paid ₹7,500 for providing it.

The case comes as Gurugram police continue to uncover wider cyber fraud networks operating across states. In March, officers said they had dismantled a larger racket linked to investment fraud, loan fraud, digital arrest scams, cyber slavery and credit card fraud, with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre flagging thousands of related complaints. Earlier this year, police also reported arrests in a digital arrest case and other online frauds, underscoring how scammers are using layered account networks, phone messages and impersonation tactics to move stolen money quickly.
