Tamil Nadu doubles health insurance coverage and unveils major healthcare infrastructure expansion

The Tamil Nadu government has significantly increased its Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme coverage from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh, while announcing plans for a new multispeciality hospital and a comprehensive cancer-care upgrade, alongside initiatives to expand medical education and enhance inclusivity for transgender patients.

Tamil Nadu has sharply increased the annual cover under its flagship Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, lifting the ceiling from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh in a move aimed at widening access to more advanced treatment. The scheme, which the state says serves economically vulnerable families, has been running since 2009 and is currently administered by United India Insurance Company, with coverage extending to around 1.48 crore families through 2027.

The government also plans to build a 400-bed multispeciality hospital in Perambur, Chennai, at a cost of ₹300 crore. Officials say the facility is intended to meet the needs of north Chennai, where demand for specialist care has long outstripped local capacity. Alongside that project, the state has set out a wider cancer-care upgrade worth ₹673.44 crore, including an integrated treatment centre at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and regional cancer units at five government medical college hospitals.

The package goes beyond buildings and insurance limits. Tamil Nadu plans to add about 6,098 seats in nursing, pharmacy and paramedical courses, with an outlay of ₹351 crore, including seven new government nursing colleges offering 660 BSc Nursing places. The insurance scheme will also extend medical and surgical services for transgender people at seven government medical college hospitals, reflecting a broader attempt to make public healthcare more inclusive.
