Despite easing deposit rates, savers can still secure attractive yields on short-term certificates of deposit, with Synchrony Bank leading offers at 4.15% APY for a 14-month term amid ongoing rate fluctuations.
Deposit rates are easing, but savers can still find returns that comfortably beat most easy-access accounts. Yahoo Finance said the top certificate of deposit on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, pays 4.15% APY, with Synchrony Bank offering that yield on its 14-month CD.
That rate sits at the upper end of a market where the best short-term CDs, typically six to 12 months, are still clustering around 4% APY, according to Yahoo Finance’s daily survey. Synchrony’s own product page says the 14-month CD has no minimum balance requirement, while its wider CD range includes shorter and longer terms as well as bump-up and no-penalty options.
For savers weighing whether to lock money away, the term matters as much as the headline rate. Forbes Advisor and NerdWallet both note that Synchrony offers several CD structures, including high-yield, no-penalty and bump-up accounts, which can help customers balance return against flexibility. Independent listings also show that other banks are still advertising competitive short-term yields, with Marcus by Goldman Sachs and Limelight Bank among those offering around 4% on six-month CDs in early August.
The broader backdrop helps explain why these offers still look attractive even as rates drift down. Yahoo Finance said CD returns surged after the Federal Reserve’s tightening cycle from 2022 to 2023, then began to cool after cuts in 2024 and 2025. Even so, rates remain high by long-run standards, which means savers who want safety and certainty can still secure a fixed return without having to chase riskier investments.
