Two men from Haryana were arrested after a two-month investigation into alleged card-swapping fraud linked to 41 cases across several states.
Police in Namakkal district have arrested two men from Haryana in connection with an ATM card-swapping racket that allegedly targeted cash withdrawal customers across multiple states. According to local police, the suspects were caught after a two-month technical investigation and sustained surveillance, ending a string of complaints linked to people who believed they were being helped at kiosks.
The men, identified as Sandeep, 40, and Karamveer, 42, are said to have posed as friendly bystanders, watched victims enter their PINs and then switched genuine cards for dummy ones. Police recovered 361 ATM and debit cards, a TVS Apache motorcycle, two mobile phones, a point-of-sale machine and Rs 47,500 in cash. The district police also said the pair were linked to 41 fraud cases in total, including 29 against Sandeep and 12 against Karamveer, with four cases filed in Namakkal district alone.
The arrest comes amid wider concern over card-swapping fraud in southern India, where police in recent months have reported similar cases in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere. In another recent case in Palacode, police in Tamil Nadu arrested three men from Karnataka in connection with a card-swapping offence at an SBI kiosk, while investigators in Mumbai and Telangana have separately described ATM-linked fraud and mule-account operations used to move illicit funds.
Namakkal police have urged the public not to hand over cards to strangers offering help at cash machines and to remain alert whenever they use ATM kiosks. The superintendent of police praised the district team for tracing the suspects through continuous technical analysis.
