The Indian government urges domestic LPG consumers to complete biometric verification through Aadhaar to ensure subsidy transparency and curb fraud, amidst rising scam concerns and a tight deadline.
Domestic LPG consumers in India have been told to complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC if they have not already done so, as the government steps up a drive to verify beneficiaries and reduce subsidy leakage. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the requirement applies only to consumers who have not previously finished the biometric process; those who have already done it do not need to repeat it. The warning came amid a deadline-driven push that urged households to act quickly and avoid any disruption to their records.
The official aim is to make sure LPG subsidies reach genuine users and to remove duplicate, inactive or otherwise unauthorised connections from the system. In March 2026, the ministry said the process was designed to improve transparency, while also stressing that refill supply would not be affected for consumers who have completed verification. Industry and government reports also said the measure was intended to strengthen delivery of subsidised cylinders rather than penalise compliant households.
Consumers can complete the process through the mobile apps of major oil marketing companies, by visiting an authorised distributor, or in some cases through biometric authentication using delivery equipment. NDTV reported that smartphone-based verification can also be done using the relevant LPG app and the Aadhaar FaceRD app. The process is described as free, and official guidance says consumers should rely only on approved channels rather than unverified links or third-party services.
Authorities and banks have also warned about scams linked to LPG e-KYC. Fraudsters have sent messages claiming subsidies are suspended and directing users to fake websites to collect personal or banking details, according to security alerts cited by financial institutions. Consumers have been urged not to share passwords or one-time codes over the phone and to check their e-KYC status only through official LPG platforms or authorised distributors.
