HDFC ERGO launches outpatient-focused Optima Wellbeing rider to cater to rising demand for wellness and teleconsultation services

HDFC ERGO’s new Optima Wellbeing rider aims to fill a gap in Indian health insurance by providing policyholders with unlimited teleconsultations, wellness discounts, and doctor consultations, though limited to network providers, marking a shift towards comprehensive outpatient support.

HDFC ERGO’s Optima Wellbeing rider is designed to fill a common gap in Indian health insurance: everyday outpatient costs that do not involve hospital admission. The add-on can be attached to eligible retail plans such as Optima Secure and Optima Secure Plus, and HDFC ERGO says it gives policyholders access to cashless doctor consultations, discounted diagnostics, medicine discounts, free home sample collection and wellness services through its partner network.

The rider’s main draw is unlimited teleconsultations with general physicians, specialists and super-specialists, alongside in-person consultations with general physicians at network clinics. HDFC ERGO also says the package includes discounts of up to 50% on lab tests and scans, up to 20% on home-delivered medicines, unlimited psychology e-counselling, dietitian consultations and live online fitness classes. But the benefits are limited to the insurer’s designated network, and there is no reimbursement option if a customer goes outside it.

Pricing is simple, at least on paper: HDFC ERGO lists a flat annual premium of ₹949 for an individual and ₹1,899 for a family floater. The rider can be bought only at policy inception or renewal, not mid-term, and HDFC ERGO says a 30-day waiting period applies in the first policy year for illness-related consultations. The company also states that the add-on runs across India, although practical access depends on whether partner providers are available in a customer’s pincode.

The wider appeal of the rider depends heavily on where a policyholder lives and how often they use outpatient care. HDFC ERGO’s Optima Secure base plan already includes features such as the Secure Benefit, which doubles the cover from day one, plus the Restore Benefit and optional extras such as hospital cash. Optima Secure Plus goes further with the Serious Illness Booster, which adds extra cover for nine serious illnesses, and also offers the Optima Wellbeing add-on. In that context, the rider is best viewed as a convenience layer for people who expect frequent consultations and want wellness support bundled into their policy, rather than a substitute for broader medical cover.
