HDFC Bank leverages comedy and celebrities in new fraud-prevention campaign on JioHotstar

HDFC Bank’s innovative campaign, featuring India’s top comedians and launched during Independence Day celebrations, aims to tackle digital frauds by normalising hesitation and inaction through humour and celebrity influence, extending its popular Vigil Aunty brand.

HDFC Bank has rolled out a new fraud-awareness push built around comedy, turning to some of India’s best-known stand-up performers to carry a simple message: when a digital request feels urgent, the safest move may be to stop and think. The seven-part series, “Vigil Aunty Says – Laziness Saves”, will stream on JioHotstar from 15 August 2026, timed to coincide with India’s Independence Day. According to the bank, the campaign is aimed at scam tactics that rely on panic, including fake one-time password requests, phishing links and so-called digital arrest frauds.

The latest project extends a wider fraud-prevention brand that HDFC Bank introduced in 2022, when it first launched Vigil Aunty as a fictional online guide to safer banking. That character, initially played by Anuradha Menon, was used in videos, chat programmes and social media posts to explain how fraudsters operate and how customers can protect themselves. The bank describes Vigil Aunty as a social media influencer with a following of more than 2.2 million, positioned to reach younger, digitally active users as well as older customers.

By shifting from conventional warnings to entertainment-led messaging, HDFC Bank is trying to meet scammers on psychological rather than purely technical ground. Fraud campaigns often exploit speed, fear and a sense that action must be taken immediately. The bank’s answer is to normalise hesitation, or even inaction, as a security habit. The creative work for the new series was developed by FCBKinnect, while the cast includes Aakash Gupta, Gaurav Kapoor, Ramkumar Natarajan, Harsh Gujral, Sonu Venugopal, Munawar Faruqui and Kenny Sebastian.

The bank has already seen the Vigil Aunty concept gain wider recognition. In 2024, its “End of Scam Sale” campaign won a Silver Lion at Cannes Lions after using a fake brand to show how convincingly fraud can be disguised. But the new comedy series marks a further step, using humour and celebrity reach to keep fraud prevention visible in a market where digital banking continues to expand and scam methods keep evolving.
