A man in Gwalior lost ₹36 lakh after falling victim to a scam promising high returns through fake trading platforms, highlighting the growing dangers of online investment fraud fueled by social media advertisements.
A man in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, has reportedly lost ₹36 lakh after falling for an online trading fraud that promised unusually high returns, a reminder of how quickly investment scams can spread through social media. According to reports by Aaj Tak, India Today and others, the case began with a Facebook advert promoting trading gains that appeared easy and fast.
From there, the victim was drawn into a WhatsApp group where fraudsters presented themselves as guides to profitable online investing. He was then urged to open an account on a trading app, where fake profits were allegedly shown on screen to build trust. The scam became clear only when he tried to withdraw the money and found he could not access it, the reports said.
The broader pattern fits a familiar type of fraud in which criminals use glossy adverts, messaging groups and fabricated returns to lure people into sending more money. Experts quoted in the reports advised users to avoid suspicious trading platforms, ignore claims of guaranteed or outsized profits, and check carefully that any app or platform is properly registered before investing.
