Authorities in Nicosia investigate a new online fraud case where a woman lost €10,000 in a fake loan scheme, amid a rising trend of digital financial scams in Cyprus.
Police in Nicosia are investigating another online fraud case after a woman was tricked into sending €10,000 in what appeared to be a loan offer on social media. According to police, she clicked through from the advert, submitted her personal details and was later contacted by unknown people who told her the payment was needed as security to release the loan.
The suspects then sent her a QR code and told her to complete the transfer online. She followed the instructions, only to realise afterwards that the loan did not exist and that the money had gone to fraudsters.
The case comes amid a string of similar scams in Cyprus, where criminals have used fake investment platforms, bogus advisers and telephone fraud to pressure victims into transferring money. In one recent case reported by Kathimerini, a 64-year-old woman lost €39,000 after being drawn into a supposed investment scheme, while another woman in Paphos was said to have lost more than €6,000 after being promised easy profits.
Police have again urged the public to be cautious when dealing with unknown people or organisations online. They say anyone asked to make an upfront payment should check the firm’s identity, background and credibility before sending money.
