Tatkal NPS lets eligible BHIM users open pension accounts using bank-verified KYC details, with an initial contribution of ₹250 and six banks supporting the launch.
NPCI BHIM Services Ltd. has made “Tatkal NPS” available on the BHIM Payments App, giving eligible users a faster way to open a National Pension System account without visiting a branch or filling out new paperwork. The facility, introduced by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, is designed to let users complete onboarding in three steps using bank-verified know your customer details already on record.
The process asks users to enter their date of birth, choose an eligible bank account and make an initial contribution through the Unified Payments Interface. According to Moneycontrol and Mint, the minimum first payment is ₹250, while subsequent contributions can start from ₹10, subject to NPS rules.
At launch, the service is available to customers of State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank and Bank of Baroda, although Moneycontrol and other reports said the exact list may expand as more banks are added. That limited rollout suggests the platform is still being widened in stages, rather than opened to all bank customers at once.
Lalitha Nataraj, managing director and chief executive of NBSL, said in a statement that UPI is already part of everyday financial life for hundreds of millions of Indians and that the next step is to make retirement savings easier to access. S. Ramann, chairman of PFRDA, said the new route could change the way people prepare for old age, adding that the aim is to reach citizens across towns and villages.
The NPS itself is a low-cost retirement scheme regulated by PFRDA, with money invested in market-linked funds run by pension fund managers. Outlook Money reported that the regulator expects the Tatkal route to attract two to three crore subscribers over the next two years, underscoring the scale of the push to turn digital payments infrastructure into a gateway for long-term savings.
