Axis Bank offers the best five-year senior citizen fixed deposit rate, but the margin is modest

While Axis Bank leads in five-year senior citizen FD returns, the difference with other lenders remains narrow, highlighting the importance of considering additional factors beyond interest rates for elderly investors.

For senior citizens weighing where to place a one-time Rs 10 lakh deposit, the gap in returns between large banks is real but modest, according to the comparison. Among the five lenders covered, Axis Bank comes out ahead on the stated five-year rate, while Punjab National Bank sits at the bottom of the group. The figures matter because fixed deposits remain a favoured option for older savers seeking predictable income and limited risk.

On the stated assumptions, Axis Bank’s 7.25% senior-citizen rate on a five-year deposit would produce about Rs 72,500 in annual interest and a maturity value of roughly Rs 14.32 lakh. ICICI Bank’s 7.10% offer would take the same deposit to about Rs 14.22 lakh, while State Bank of India’s 7.05% rate would leave it at around Rs 14.18 lakh. HDFC Bank’s 6.90% rate would yield an estimated Rs 14.08 lakh, and Punjab National Bank’s 6.85% rate would return about Rs 14.04 lakh.

That leaves a difference of nearly Rs 27,875 between the highest and lowest maturity values in this comparison. The calculations assume a cumulative fixed deposit with quarterly compounding, so actual payouts can shift depending on the bank’s rules, the chosen payout option and whether the deposit is booked as a standard cumulative FD or for periodic income.

Broader market comparisons suggest senior-citizen rates can vary more widely than the five-bank sample indicates. A separate comparison published by Calcscope said small finance banks have offered rates as high as 9.5%, while public sector lenders such as SBI and PNB have been in the 7.25% to 7.5% range and some private banks have paid 7.5% to 7.75%. Livemint has also noted that the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme can be attractive because it carries a government-backed rate of 8.2% for five years.

Even so, rate alone should not decide the choice. Senior investors also need to check premature withdrawal penalties, payout frequency, deposit insurance limits and tax treatment, because FD interest is taxable under the applicable income-tax rules. Websites tracking bank deposits say senior-citizen FD rates are revised over time, so the best offer today may not be the best one when the deposit is finally booked.
