Argentina’s tax and customs agency has warned the public about a phishing scam that uses fake e-mails to mimic official ARCA notices and pressure recipients into paying money for the supposed release of an international parcel. According to reports circulating in the local press and ARCA’s own security guidance, the messages imitate the agency’s branding and try to convince people that a package has been held at customs.
The fraud does not stop at a payment demand. Victims are also asked to send photographs of both sides of their national identity document, a step ARCA says can expose them to financial fraud and identity theft. The agency’s security pages explain that such scams often use false websites and forms designed to harvest personal data, open unauthorised accounts or support credit applications and online purchases in the victim’s name.
ARCA says official communications are sent only through the Domicilio Fiscal Electrónico, not through links sent by e-mail or instant messaging services. Its guidance tells taxpayers to treat suspicious messages with caution, avoid opening attached links, and forward doubtful mails for review to phishing@arca.gob.ar, including the full header where possible.
If someone has already shared document images or made a payment, ARCA advises them to file a criminal complaint immediately, alert their bank to block suspicious activity and monitor credit reports for signs of misuse. The agency also says digital fraud includes impersonation websites and other online deceptions aimed at obtaining improper gains or abusing its services, underscoring how closely current scams are being tailored to official-looking channels.
