Actor Akkineni Nagarjuna shares his own encounter with cyber fraud during a Hyderabad anti-piracy event, highlighting the widening scope of online scams beyond piracy and the urgent need for public awareness.
Actor Akkineni Nagarjuna has said he himself was caught up in a cybercrime scam, using a recent anti-piracy event in Hyderabad to underline how easily fraudsters can exploit digital trust. The actor told attendees that, around 4 years ago, he received a call from someone claiming to be a bank official and was pitched an investment scheme promising unusually high returns.
Nagarjuna also warned that the danger is wider than movie piracy. According to The Times of India, he said a family member was subjected to a so-called digital arrest, a type of scam in which fraudsters pose as law enforcement or government officials and pressure victims into believing they are tied up in a criminal case. In another report, the family member was said to have been held in that state for 2 days before police intervention helped bring the episode to an end.
The comments came at a press conference organised by Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar to announce the arrest of Emmadi Ravi, identified by local media as the main accused behind the iBomma website, which uploaded pirated films. Nagarjuna praised the Telangana Police for moving quickly against the piracy network and linked such sites to broader risks, including the misuse of personal data gathered online.
He urged the public not to answer calls from unknown numbers and to avoid downloading unfamiliar applications, a warning that reflects the growing overlap between cyber fraud, piracy and data theft. His remarks add a personal note to a campaign that police and film industry figures are increasingly framing as both an intellectual property issue and a public safety concern.
