Tata Motors maintains lead in India’s accelerating EV market with new models and strategic growth targets

Tata Motors secures its dominant position in India’s fast-growing EV sector by holding market share, launching new models, and outlining ambitious growth plans amid rising competition from Ola Electric and Mahindra.

Tata Motors holds firm in India EV race as Q1 share steadies

Tata Motors said its passenger vehicle business kept a strong grip on the domestic market in the June quarter, with Vahan data showing a 14.3% share and its No 2 position intact. The company also said its electric passenger vehicle market share held at 39%, keeping it in the lead even as competition in the fast-growing EV segment intensified.

The performance comes as India’s EV market continues to expand. ICRA said electric vehicles accounted for 6.5% of passenger vehicle sales in the quarter, up from 4.6% in FY26, helped by higher fuel costs and lower GST rates. Business Standard reported that Tata Motors’ EV share rose from 36.1% a year earlier, underscoring how the company has used a broader battery-electric line-up to defend its lead.

Tata Motors also pointed to newer models as a growth lever. It launched the next-generation Tiago and Tiago.ev, which it said were aimed at lifting the hatchback segment with sharper design, improved technology and better value. The company also unveiled the all-new Sierra.ev, which it described as its most advanced take yet on the nameplate, a move intended to strengthen its premium and electric offerings.

At its June investor day, Tata Motors outlined a five-year plan to nearly double volumes, reach a 20% market share, deliver double-digit EBITDA margins and generate strong free cash flow. That longer-term target sits against a more crowded EV landscape, with reports also showing fast gains from rivals such as Ola Electric and Mahindra’s last-mile mobility arm in their respective segments.
