Tata Elxsi margins recover, but profits still trail revenue growth

Tata Elxsi’s revenue and operating margins improved in the September quarter, but almost flat sequential profit leaves investors waiting for stronger evidence of a durable turnaround.

Tata Elxsi’s share price has staged a partial recovery after sliding to a 52-week low, but the business itself is still in the middle of a more complicated turnaround. The design and engineering services company, which works across transport, media and communications, and healthcare, has now delivered another quarter of double-digit revenue growth and a clearer improvement in operating margins, even as profit growth continues to lag behind the top line.

The stock had fallen to ₹2,996 before bouncing after the September-quarter update. It later traded at about ₹3,845 on the BSE, lifting its market value to roughly ₹23,956.55 crore. That rebound has eased some of the pressure on investors, but the shares remain well below their 52-week high of ₹5,950, suggesting the market is still waiting for more sustained proof that the recovery is genuine.

For the quarter ended in September, Tata Elxsi reported revenue from operations of ₹1,055.66 crore, up 15% from a year earlier and 3.38% from the previous quarter. Business was broad-based, with transportation, media and communications, and healthcare and life sciences all improving sequentially. According to Business Standard, the company also beat expectations on a sequential basis, helped by a steady improvement in demand across its main verticals.

Operating performance was the clearest sign of progress. EBITDA rose to ₹231.4 crore, while the margin expanded to 21.9% from 21.2% in the June quarter, an improvement of 70 basis points. That suggests better operating leverage, even with employee and other costs still weighing on the business. But the bottom line has not moved in step: net profit came in at ₹170.3 crore, up 10% from a year earlier, yet almost unchanged from the previous quarter, underscoring the company’s difficulty in turning higher sales into faster earnings growth.

Brokerages remain divided on how durable the recovery will be. The company expects the second half of the financial year to improve, with media and communications likely to remain a bright spot and the US and Indian markets expected to stay healthy. Management has also pointed to room for further margin gains if utilisation rises from 78% towards a target of 81% to 82%, aided by a better workforce mix, no wage-hike impact in the second half and a greater share of work shifted offshore. ICICI Securities said the quarter may mark the start of a recovery and upgraded the stock to Hold from Reduce, while noting that Europe remains weak. LiveMint reported that Motilal Oswal kept a Sell rating, citing concerns over sustained growth and the European automotive market. With revenue improving and margins recovering, Tata Elxsi’s next test is whether it can sustain that momentum long enough to lift profits more convincingly.
