MRPL estimates ₹118.76 crore hit from refinery fire as quarterly profit surges

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd says damage from the September 30 Coker Hydrotreater fire is fully insured, while quarterly profit after tax rose 194% to ₹1,881 crore.

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd has told stock exchanges that a fire at its Coker Hydrotreater unit on September 30 has so far been estimated to have caused a financial hit of ₹118.76 crore. In notes to its standalone results for the second quarter of 2026-27, the company said the preliminary assessment covers the damaged plant and equipment, along with inventory losses and other incidental costs. MRPL also said the replacement value of the affected assets is about ₹225 crore.

The company said the damaged assets are fully insured and that the loss will be assessed again before it is formally recognised in a later reporting period, once accounting requirements are met. Despite the incident, MRPL reported a profit after tax of ₹1,881 crore for the quarter, up 194% from ₹639 crore in the same period a year earlier, underscoring a sharp improvement in its quarterly performance even as it deals with the aftermath of the refinery fire.
