JSW Cement rebounds with net profit surge amid margin pressures in Q1 FY27

JSW Cement reports a significant turnaround in Q1 FY27, swinging to a ₹161 crore net profit from last year’s loss, driven by higher revenues and cost management, although margins remain under pressure amid rising operating costs and capacity expansion.

JSW Cement has reported a sharp turnaround in the first quarter of FY27, swinging to a consolidated net profit of ₹161 crore from a loss of ₹1,356 crore a year earlier, even as pressure on margins showed the limits of the recovery. According to an exchange filing cited by NDTV Profit, revenue rose 21.6% year on year to ₹1,896 crore, but earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation fell 7.5% to ₹299 crore, pulling the margin down to 15.7% from 20.7%.

A closer look at the company’s standalone numbers helps explain the squeeze. Revenue from operations increased to ₹1,737.89 crore from ₹1,445.22 crore a year earlier, but power and fuel costs climbed to ₹257.33 crore and freight and handling expenses reached ₹395.57 crore. Finance costs were ₹80.14 crore, underscoring how rising operating inputs can still blunt profitability even when sales are growing.

The improvement below the operating line was just as striking. Standalone profit before tax came in at ₹147.25 crore, compared with a loss of ₹1,257.16 crore in the same quarter last year, when exceptional items included a ₹1,466.38 crore charge. That contrast highlights how much of the year-on-year jump reflects the absence of one-off costs as well as better trading performance.

The company is also leaning on capacity growth to support future volumes. Motilal Oswal reported in June that JSW Cement’s integrated plant in Nagaur, Rajasthan, began operations in March 2026, adding 3.3 million tonnes a year of clinker capacity and 2.5 million tonnes a year of grinding capacity. The group is aiming for long-term capacity of around 46 million tonnes, up from roughly 24 million tonnes now, though utilisation and pricing will remain decisive for earnings. Shares of JSW Cement ended the day at ₹131.11, up 0.43%, but the stock remains 10.24% lower over the past year.
