Five of India’s most valuable listed firms collectively lost ₹1 trillion in market capitalisation last week as domestic and global risks hit investor sentiment, led by Tata Consultancy Services’ steepest decline.
Five of India’s 10 most valuable listed companies lost a combined ₹1 trillion in market value last week as domestic equities weakened, with Tata Consultancy Services taking the heaviest blow. The sell-off came as the Sensex fell 489.92 points, or 0.62%, and the Nifty slipped 204.65 points, or 0.83%, reflecting a cautious mood across the market. According to Religare Broking’s Ajit Mishra, higher crude prices, renewed geopolitical uncertainty and mixed global signals all weighed on sentiment.
TCS’s valuation fell by ₹34,263.28 crore to ₹8,53,506.85 crore, while Reliance Industries lost ₹31,869.13 crore and State Bank of India shed ₹25,891.88 crore. HDFC Bank’s market capitalisation eased by ₹7,165.37 crore, and ICICI Bank’s declined by ₹2,792.65 crore. Taken together, those five companies accounted for the bulk of the week’s erosion in value.
The weakness was partly offset by gains elsewhere in the top-10 ranking. Life Insurance Corporation of India added ₹26,438.49 crore, Bharti Airtel rose by ₹20,592.13 crore, Bajaj Finance climbed by ₹3,548.79 crore, Larsen & Toubro gained ₹2,490.66 crore and Hindustan Unilever advanced ₹2,079.38 crore. Business Standard’s tally showed that these five companies together added ₹55,149.45 crore over the same period.
Even after the weekly swings, Reliance Industries remained India’s most valuable company, ahead of Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, TCS, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, LIC and Hindustan Unilever. The latest changes underline how quickly index heavyweights can be buffeted by shifts in oil prices, global risk appetite and sector-specific flows, particularly in financials and information technology.
