Indian stocks face volatility as US jobs data and oil prices create uncertainty

Indian markets opened mixed amid cautious investor sentiment driven by softer US employment figures and rising oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions, highlighting a complex balancing act for traders ahead of key earnings and policy cues.

Indian equities opened mixed on August 10 as traders weighed a softer-than-expected US labour market against renewed pressure from crude oil prices. The cautious mood reflected a tug of war between hopes that the Federal Reserve may have less reason to tighten policy and fears that a jump in energy costs could complicate inflation and corporate margins.

The latest US jobs data showed the economy lost 23,000 positions in July, the first monthly decline since February, according to Axios and the Associated Press. That was well below expectations for a solid gain and came with steep downward revisions to May and June, which suggested the slowdown in hiring was broader than first thought. Markets quickly pushed down the odds of a September rate increase, a shift that typically supports capital flows into emerging markets such as India.

Even so, rising oil prices are limiting the upside. Brent has moved above $84 a barrel as traders respond to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for global energy supplies. For India, a major importer of crude, that creates a direct risk to inflation, the current account and corporate profitability, all of which can weigh on sentiment. Foreign portfolio buying has helped steady the market in recent weeks, but it has not been enough to remove the sense of caution.

Technically, analysts are watching the Nifty’s 24,450 to 24,500 band as near-term support, with resistance seen around 24,750 to 24,800. The next stretch of trading is likely to hinge on second-quarter earnings and whether oil prices stabilise. For now, investors appear to be balancing the prospect of easier US monetary policy against the possibility that geopolitics and energy costs will keep markets choppy.
