HDFC Bank’s CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan will step down at the end of his term, prompting an accelerated search for a successor amid falling share prices and governance concerns, signalling potential for a market re-rating.
HDFC Bank shares edged higher on Monday after the Indian lender said Sashidhar Jagdishan will step down as chief executive when his current term ends on 26 October, setting up a leadership transition at a time when the stock has lagged the broader market. Investors appeared to take some comfort from the prospect that a new leader could reset sentiment, even as the shares gave back part of their early gains.
According to CNBC, the move comes after Jagdishan told the board he would not seek reappointment, despite efforts to persuade him to stay. HDFC Bank said it would accelerate the search for a successor, while also acknowledging his role in the bank’s growth and in the completion of one of corporate India’s biggest mergers.
The leadership change arrives against a more difficult backdrop for the lender. LSEG data cited by CNBC showed HDFC Bank shares have fallen 27% so far this year, compared with an 8% decline in the Nifty 50 index. Nomura said in a report on Sunday that the next chief executive will need to lift growth, improve deposit gathering and returns, and restore confidence in governance and senior management stability.
The bank has also been under scrutiny on governance issues this year. In March, part-time chair Atanu Chakraborty resigned after raising ethical and governance concerns, adding to investor unease. Nomura said a credible successor could become a meaningful catalyst for a re-rating, but warned the stock was likely to stay under pressure until the market gets clarity on who will lead the bank and how that leader plans to steer it.
