Rise of fake UPI apps exposes vulnerable Indian users to new scam techniques

Fraudsters are increasingly deploying counterfeit UPI apps that mimic legitimate platforms, posing a significant risk to everyday users relying on mobile payments. Experts warn that verifying transactions through official channels is crucial to prevent financial losses.

UPI has made everyday payments far easier, but it has also given fraudsters new ways to deceive users. TV9 Hindi reported that scammers are now using fake UPI apps designed to look almost identical to legitimate ones, complete with convincing success messages and payment sounds. The danger is simple: a transaction can appear to go through on-screen even when no money has reached the seller’s account.

These fake apps can mimic widely used platforms such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm, and the links are sometimes shared through Telegram, according to TV9 Hindi. That makes small shopkeepers, traders and daily wage earners particularly vulnerable, especially when they rely on a phone notification or sound effect as proof of payment. A screenshot or audio alert is not enough; the money must be confirmed in the app’s transaction history or bank statement.

Security guides from Gadgets360 and IndianUPI say users should download payment apps only from official app stores, check the developer name carefully and avoid installing software from suspicious links. They also recommend looking at app ratings, permissions, update frequency and even the quality of the icon and listing, since counterfeit apps often contain small but telling flaws. In practice, a rushed install is one of the easiest ways to fall for a clone.

Other anti-fraud advice is consistent across consumer guides: never share a UPI PIN, and never enter it to “receive” money. Norafi.ai and Cyber Scam Check both note that the PIN is only required when sending funds, not collecting them. They also warn about related tricks such as fake QR codes, collect requests, refund scams and impersonation attempts that pressure users into approving a payment or revealing sensitive details.

If a transaction looks suspicious, the safest response is to check the account or official app immediately and alert the bank without delay. TV9 Hindi says victims of cyber fraud in India can call 1930 and file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in. The central message from all of the guides is the same: UPI is convenient, but every payment should be verified independently before goods or services are handed over.
