Qatar Post has introduced PosTransfer, enabling Indian expatriates in Qatar to send money directly to India via UPI, strengthening cross-border financial links and extending India’s digital payment reach.
Qatar Post has introduced PosTransfer, a remittance service that lets Indian expatriates in Qatar send money directly to bank accounts linked to India’s Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, according to the company announcement.
The launch adds another layer to the growing financial links between Qatar and India, and comes after a series of moves to widen the use of UPI outside India. India Post and the Universal Postal Union, working with NPCI International Payments Ltd, unveiled a global digital remittance service in January 2026 that connects UPI with the postal network’s international financial platform. The postal union says PosTransfer is designed for real-time electronic money orders and is built around service standards meant to make transfers both dependable and low-cost.
For customers, the process is straightforward. Qatar Post says users can visit one of its branches, provide the recipient’s UPI ID and the mobile number linked to the account, and complete the transfer almost instantly. The beneficiary receives an SMS once the funds arrive and does not need to collect cash from a post office. The service is aimed in particular at Qatar’s large Indian population, which the company says numbers more than 800,000 and includes many low-income workers who regularly send money home.
Sandeep Kumar, the charge d’affaires at the Indian Embassy in Qatar, said the arrangement makes strong commercial sense and adds credibility to the remittance system between the two countries. The launch also reflects a broader push by Indian payment infrastructure providers to extend UPI’s reach abroad. In Qatar, Commercial Bank and Qatar National Bank have already introduced UPI acceptance for merchants, giving Indian travellers another way to pay directly with their phones.
